The Spell of Capitalism is a year-long exploration in uncovering the truth about capitalism, how it forms our lives, and what’s possible beyond its borders so that we can begin to dream, scheme, and create new ways of being & relating that honor our wholeness, our complexities, and our intrinsic wisdom.

Uncovering and unspelling from capitalism in all of the ways possible.

Capitalism Is More Than An Economic System

It’s about more than the free market, goods + services, and profit. It’s about more than money and wealth...yet all of those things are intrinsic parts of capitalism. The true essence of capitalism can be found in the crevices of our lives, in all of the ways we relate and interact with one another, the daily practices that we have, and how we think about ourselves and the world around us.

Essentially from a very young age, we’re taught how to be good at supporting capitalism. We’re taught to support our own exploitation. We’re shown the ropes of how to exist in a world that sees us only as workers and producers and not how to truly be in relationship with anything or anyone.

Capitalism, if we say it enough without actually understanding how it shows up in our personal worlds or how we participate in it, begins to just become a word. A word that we use but don’t really understand how it deeply impacts us. We must begin to think of capitalism as a set of relationships. Relationships that are deeply connected and interwoven. Relationships that are created, nurtured, and upheld through exploitation and expropriation. Relationships that are hard to separate or disconnect because they depend on each other.

Because we don’t understand how we got here, how we came to exist inside these relationships of exploitation with ourselves, with each other, and with the land...we can’t imagine a way forward. We can’t see a different way of relating. Like Mark Fisher said “It’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.”

This is our work. We are being required and called to see, call-out, and change that which has tried to remain hidden for so long.

Listen above to what a past participant had to say about this journey.

Let's Unlearn and Learn Together

The Spell of Capitalism is a space to learn, discuss, unpack, and develop ways to bring anti-capitalist practices, thoughts, and ways of being to our lives. This space isn’t about overhauling your whole life (though it can be). This space isn’t about simply acquiring more knowledge on a subject without action. This space isn’t about keeping our knowledge hidden so that no one else benefits.

This space is about unlearning, learning, and fostering an environment where you can cultivate the tiniest pivot in both mindset and action that can spark a change that can be maintained and embodied for the long haul.

Because learning without embodiment doesn’t spark change nor promote possibility.

We can read all of the books, we can scroll social media and absorb the memes, we can attend all of the webinars but what is beyond the learning? What are the practices that are born from the learning? What are the ways that we are embodying the knowledge?

The Spell of Capitalism is designed to help participants consider the ways capitalism has facilitated our fundamental disconnection from ourselves, each other, the places we live and come from and the collective as a whole. We believe that capitalism works like a spell--you don’t know how you got here or what happened and are therefore powerless.

This exploration creates a learning environment where you can break the spell by lifting the veil. Together we explore the ways we got here, who benefits from our unconsciousness, and how together we can question where late-stage capitalism wants to take us from here.

How We’ll Unspell Together

Over the course of a year, we’ll gently unpack how capitalism shows up in our lives. During each of the 12-months we spend together, we'll focus on a specific area of our lives as it connects to capitalism so that we can interrogate, excavate, and cultivate a deeper understanding of how capitalism colors that particular area of our life with the hope that we’ll be able to do things differently.

This space is about unlearning, learning, and fostering an environment where you can cultivate the tiniest pivot in both mindset and action that can spark a change that can be maintained and embodied for the long haul.

• Monthly Syllabus •
Each monthly syllabus contains reading material + media aiding you in beginning the exploration of the topic for the month. This material is meant to nurture your intellectual understanding of how capitalism works and how we got here.

• Monthly Exploration Conversations •
Listen in as Toi and Jen shoot the shit and get real and personal about their own experiences with unhooking from social norms and pushing back on narratives that say centering capitalism in your life is the only way. These conversations are meant to add nuance and layers to the monthly topic and provide you with some thoughts to chew on beyond the material provided in the syllabus. Transcription of each conversation is also provided.

• Monthly Reflection Questions + Embodiment Practices •
The topics that are being discussed during this exploration can be heavy and feel hard to navigate because they’re uprooting how we’ve been conditioned to think, so in order to counter that we need ample time to reflect and understand where we’re located in relation to the material. We also need to move our knowledge into ways of being that live in the body.

• Monthly Salon Gatherings •
These live 1-hour sessions, facilitated by Toi and Jen, take place on the last Saturday of each month from 2:30 pm est to 3:30 pm est and are a space for us to commune and exchange ideas, questions, and debate the monthly topic. The goal is to hold space for inspiration and varying perspectives so that we can get somewhere real and uncover more about what's possible.

Each month you’ll receive three emails from us that cover everything you need to know to participate.

The first email contains the introduction to the topic, the monthly syllabus, and the song for the month to root us in the energy of the topic. This email is sent on the 5th of each month.

The second email contains the link to the exploration conversation, the reflection questions + embodiment practices, and a supplemental syllabus for those who want to dig deeper. This email is sent on the 15th of each month.

The third email contains a reminder note for the salon gathering for the month and a way to rsvp. This email is sent the day before our gatherings.

"The live conversations have been the best part of The Spell of Capitalism. I feel like I’ve gotten so much thought provocations and normalization from folks in the space. Also, exploring layers of capitalism that I hadn’t thought of. This exploration has deepened my ideas of what capitalism is, how it started, and how it infiltrates our lives. I’m grateful for this exploration and the labor you’ve done to put together these resources and explorations."

About Your Facilitators

First, A Disclaimer
We are avid learners, ferocious thinkers, rigorous examiners of how we live, work, love and flourish in our hurting world. The space we hold here is not the work of experts guiding you on a particular path. No, our work here is to cultivate a space where your own curiosity coupled with the accountability of learning can help all of us (ourselves included) go deeper than we’ve gone before. Your inquiry around where harm is happening in your world is as important to us as our own self-examination into where we ourselves need to grow. For this reason, we do not judge in this work and are committed to holding you and your process in positive regard, knowing that none of us change until we are able to look into the shadows with the same enthusiasm that we look to the light.

Toi Smith at the core is a learner and a seeker. She is someone who is able to continually stretch her thinking for the future and encourage others to do the same. She holds possibility very close and is always looking for the path forward while being mindful of the obstacles and considering who is included and who is left out on that path.

For the last 5 years, Toi has worked in varying capacities with entrepreneurs who desire to reimagine business. She continues to work with people who are creating businesses born from consciousness, awareness, possibility, relationship, and a deep belief in not perpetuating harmful and hurtful norms.

Beyond her work with entrepreneurs, she is a mother of four amazing sons who challenge what she thinks and how she exists in the world on a daily basis.

Jen Lemen is a second-generation entrepreneur and lifelong student of how capitalism impacts collective collaboration, liberation, and care. An early adopter/creator of online spaces, Jen was among the first wave of internet influencers who developed businesses around digital publishing, online learning, and community support beginning in 2004.

In 2008, Jen won the NameYourDreamAssignment.com, an international photography contest sponsored by Lenovo and Microsoft that allowed Jen to travel to Rwanda, Uganda, and Nepal where she began a decade-long inquiry into radical economics and the informal financial systems that sustain communities and support social cohesion.

In 2014, Jen served as a co-founder of a now-defunct technology startup competing to be the primary provider of sharing money over text. This experience further developed Jen’s understanding of the social nature of money and how money can move to support or undermine stability and security.

Our hope is that our time together will give you the framework and mental models you need to evaluate your relationship to capitalism with rigor, care, and an open mind. Our desire is that by creating a space to be brave in our curiosity about this incredible cultural pull on all of us, that together we’ll be able to find the cracks and slivers of light where new ideas and new ways of being can begin to inform our everyday praxis. Our dream is that by sharing this space and doing this work, we’ll get both the distance and closeness we need to dismantle capitalism as a “it’s the way it’s always been” mandate in our heads in favor of a more liberatory, risk-taking examination that allows for experiments in what it means to be truly free.

“Class and economic justice are topics that lots of folks struggle to talk about in the United States because most of us aren't educated in schools or the culture at large to talk about money, access to resources, and what class actually is. Class, of course, cannot be understood as an isolated experience but is part of the complex interactions of race, gender, ability, privilege, sexuality, and the myriad of identities we all hold. I think the sliding scale is a great way to begin a conversation about class because it frames the discussion from the standpoint of access.”
-Alexis J. Cunningfolk

This is for you if you know that capitalism is impacting you but you’re not sure exactly how or why everything about it feels so hard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the dates of the monthly salon gatherings?
A: These live 1-hour sessions will take place on the last Saturday of each month from 2:30 pm est - 3:30 pm est and are a space for us to commune and exchange ideas, questions, and debate the monthly topic.

Q: Are the salon gatherings recorded?
A: The salon gatherings are not recorded in order to honor the privacy of everyone participating. Also because there's just magic that happens from live events (even if they're virtual) that can't be duplicated or felt from recordings.

Q: How is the content delivered each month?
A: All content will be delivered via email each month to the email address with which you sign-up with.

Q: What is the time commitment if I decide to participate?
A: This exploration is purposely designed to be slow, intentional, and not overwhelming with content. The monthly syllabus will contain no more than 5 pieces of material to explore, the monthly conversations will be no longer than 60 minutes, and the monthly salon gatherings are held at the end of the month so that there is time to integrate the material.

Q: Do I have to attend the monthly live gatherings to fully benefit from this offering?
A: The live gatherings are a space where participants can interrogate the learning and go deeper because of the different perspectives and questions being presented. So yes, of course, you can participate in The Spell of Capitalism without attending the live gatherings but your experience during this exploration will be so much richer if you're able to attend at least a few.

Q: How is this offering accessible for people with disabilities?
A: All recorded conversations will be transcribed and shared along with the recordings and the live gatherings will include closed captioning.

Q: Is this exploration for women only?
A: This exploration is definitely for everyone because capitalism impacts everyone on the planet...of course, that impact is not equal and depends on your intersections. While we believe that this is for everyone, we are cis-hetero women who live and were raised in the United States so that is the lens that we are exploring from.

Q: What is the tech that is used to access the materials?
A: We use Zoom for our monthly salon gatherings, we use Google Docs to deliver the syllabus each month, we use Storyboard to host the monthly conversations, and of course email to send correspondence to participants.
